Course Description

This introductory course provides students with a foundational understanding of political science by examining the institutions, concepts, and processes that shape contemporary politics. It explores topics including popular sovereignty, the welfare state, electoral systems, democracy and totalitarianism, political institutions, bureaucracy, and local government in Japan. Through lectures, discussions, group work, and the analysis of current news and parliamentary proceedings, students learn to explain key political concepts, interpret academic literature, and construct conceptual frameworks. The course also develops the ability to critically evaluate political issues and express well-reasoned arguments supported by evidence, enabling students to better understand politics in everyday life and civic society.
